It's no secret that many consider the state of Colorado to be a playground for the outdoorsy types. There are a plethora of activities that can be enjoyed in said playground including fishing, skiing, rafting, camping, and of course, hiking.

If you happen to be someone who loves the more ambitious hikes, you're probably very familiar with what is known as 14ers and have maybe even hiked a few, but one of the lesser-known 14ers in Colorado known as Handies Peak is certainly not one to be overlooked.

In case you're not familiar, Handies Peak is located in the gorgeous San Juan mountain range in Hinsdale County near the small town of Lake City, Colorado.

As you'll see below, the terrain that leads up to Handies Peak is a bit rugged, but the 14er can be accessed via a trail that hikers have been using for years.

In addition, while hiking up to Handies Peak you'll encounter Sloan Lake, a high-altitude body of water with crystal-clear water surrounded by a valley that is home to most of the area's vegetation.

With an elevation of 14,048 feet above sea level, Handies Peak barely qualifies as a 14er and is the 40th highest of which in the state.

As you'll also see below, the area that leads up to Handies Peak is absolutely stunning with rugged mountains making up the bulk of the scenery that the eye can see, as well as hills, cliffs, rocks, and a small animal from time to time.
