Located about 20 minutes East of Montrose is Black Canyon National Park. One of the first places I discovered when I moved to Montrose. My Husband and I checked it out for our Anniversary. Every season is a perfect time to visit the Black Canyon.

Winter- You can snow shoe and cross country ski. The snow on the granite walls is beautiful then. Winter brings the closure of the North Rim entrance and a whole new set of activities for the South Rim. Including cross-country skiing, snow shoeing as I stated earlier, and back country camping.

Spring Simmer and Fall- They are the best time for bird watching. Also great for hiking too. There is the Rim Rock nature trail, and only 1 mile round trip. Cedar Point nature trail. Also a more moderate the Warner point nature trail. I have not made it all around the Canyon, but most of the way. I love all the lookouts, especially up by the Visitors Center. You can do just about everything during these three seasons at the Canyon. Just not snow shoe yet, unless there is an early snowfall.

You can also park after dark which offers night sky viewing opportunities throughout the year. Tomichi point is a favorite spot. Park Rangers and local astronomers present talks May thru September, every Wednesday. Friday and Sunday. When you have Family and friends visiting it's sure worth the short drive to check out the Black Canyon National Park. Watch out for wildlife, and don't pet the Deer or Elk.
