Visit The Prehistoric Past Outside Parowan

Not far from Cedar City, you can explore the prehistoric past of Iron County. 

The Parowan Gap, formed by wind, water, and sand was once used as a major thoroughfare by ancient peoples. 

Parowan Gap contains over 90 panels and 1,500 figures featuring geometric designs, lizards, snakes, bear claws, human figures, and more. The Gap is believed to be one of the most concentrated collections of petroglyphs in the West. 

Researchers have identified what they believe to be solar and lunar calendars, hunting, and cultural glyphs. 

Not far from the Gap is a collection of petrified dinosaur tracks and what is called the Little Salt Lake. 

The tracks were formed as the dinosaurs walked through the mud. The footprints filled in with pebbles and sand and over time hardened into rock. Millions of years of erosion have brought the footprints to the surface.
