Colorado's rich western history can be witnessed in many different places around the state. Architectural examples provide some of the best glimpses into how Coloradans used to live many years ago.

Forty-five minutes from Colorado Springs is a historic attraction known as the Royal Gorge Mansion. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an excellent example of Second Empire Style architecture.

History

Before it was called the Royal Gorge Mansion, the house in the heart of Cañon City was formerly referred to as the Robison Mansion. That's because Scottish immigrant Lyman Robison was responsible for building the stately structure. It took Robison a few years to complete the construction process, lasting from 1882 to 1884, but it was well worth his efforts.

Architectural Attributes

The property sits on four acres of pristine land, enclosed by a custom iron fence that's adorned with gold-foiled finial accents. A spectacular iron-cast fountain adds even more elegance to the exterior of the home. The residence is topped with a mansard roof and is full of grandeur.

The 6,500-square-foot interior of the Royal Gorge Mansion is rich in French influence and features a classic Victorian design.

Every inch of the mansion's expansive interior oozes opulence. Fourteen-foot high ceilings accented by crystal chandeliers and intricate molding add lavish glamour to the rooms.

A gourmet kitchen has been updated with modern appliances and amenities, while still keeping the home's original character totally intact.

In addition to the kitchen, two spacious parlors, a gorgeous formal dining room, and a sunroom can be found on the first level. A custom walnut staircase is another beautiful focal point of the main floor.

Four beautifully appointed bedrooms fill out the rest of the massive Cañon City dwelling. An iron-gated wine cellar and a 1920’s speakeasy-style bar are a few more personal touches left behind by Robison.

Public Entry

There are a few ways for the general public to gain entry inside the mansion.

The first is by reserving a seat at an afternoon tea time. During this authentic experience, guests get a choice of traditional and seasonal loose teas, freshly brewed, alongside English treats, finger sandwiches, clotted cream, and jam. The menu also offers wine, champagne, homemade hot cocoa, and other sweet and savory goodies. Tea with Santa is available on a seasonable basis. Reservations for afternoon tea can be made by calling 719-276-000.

The second way the public can get into this historic home is by attending an event taking place here. Many people have celebrated their weddings at the Royal Gorge Mansion, but the venue is also equipped to host corporate retreats and other types of private meetings and events.

Finally, the Royal Gorge Mansion is available for lodging on a limited basis for groups and special occasions. There are three luxurious guest rooms, plus an extraordinary master suite. Plush towels and bathrobes, along with toiletries, are provided for the full royal treatment. Lodging guests are invited to relax in the third-floor TV room or the comfortable first-floor parlors during their stay.

The 18th Century mansion is equipped to accommodate up to eight guests at a time.
