At precisely 12:01 a.m. this morning, July 21, 2023, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, along with other local authorities, implemented Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. Here's a quick rundown of the restrictions now in place in Mesa County.

These restrictions apply to all of Mesa County, including BLM land. The one exemption would be land managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

How Are These Restrictions Determined?

The press release from the Mesa County Sheriff's Office reads:

Agencies implement fire restrictions based on specific criteria to include the moisture content of vegatation, the weather outlook, and human risk factors. The data and potential for significant wildfires are balanced with the impacts on the community. In additionn to above-average to record temperatures there is a signifcant crop of dry grass that will rapidly carry fire.

A Few Fires Already

Western Colorado is already seeing a number of fires. Yesterday, July 20, 2023, the fire northeast of James M. Robb Colorado River State Park - Island Acres was designated the Beaver Tail Mesa Fire. According to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit via Facebook, "We often see this kind of fire activity right after we have dry thunderstorms move through the area."

Looking at the National Weather Service forecast for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, July 23, 24, and 25, the Grand Junction, Colorado area can expect a slight chance of thunderstorms.

Observing Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

The Stage 1 Fire Restrictions now in place for Mesa County are of a kind that one can easily observe. It's probably safe to say most Mesa County residents weren't planning on welding in the middle of a dry grassy field or setting out to detonate explosives.
