While settlers discovered the cliff dwellings in southeastern Colorado in the late 1800s, it wasn't until the 1950s that Mesa Verde became a tourist destination.

This was also around the same time that the National Parks Service was granted Mission 66, an initiative in which the United States Congress allowed parks across the country millions of dollars for upgrades, a program that would last ten years.

The Far View Visitor Center at Mesa Verde was part of Mission 66 and was built in order to look not just modern, but futuristic. As you'll see below, the building is round and resembles a spaceship in many ways.

However, after serving as a staple of Mesa Verde for decades, the unique building was abandoned in 2014 due to the need for a bigger visitor center.

Colorado's Far View Visitor Center at Mesa Verde Today

For the better part of the last decade, the futuristic-looking Far View Visitor Center at Mesa Verde National Park has sat empty.

While the building itself still stands, and many of the items from its time as a visitors center are still inside, only a handful of people have walked around inside since it was closed.

However, the National Parks Service and staff at Mesa Verde National Park have been working diligently to find a new use for the building, and hope to revamp and repurpose it in the near future.

In the meantime, check out this extremely unique building currently sitting abandoned in southeastern Colorado:
