Back in the late 1800s, Colorado was a hot spot for mining. Because of this, the state is now filled with old, abandoned ghost towns, abandoned mine shafts, and plenty of abandoned railway tunnels.

One railway that ran between 1893 and 1917 stretched all the way from Manitou Springs to Leadville, Colorado, and was known as the Colorado Midland Railway.

Along this abandoned train route are a total of 18 original tunnels. There once were more but some have since collapsed, flooded, or have been sealed shut after being left behind and neglected over 100 years ago.

Visiting these tunnels on your own is highly discouraged for safety and legal reasons, but as you'll see below, not everyone follows the rules. For example, there is evidence of people living in one of the tunnels, there is a climbing rig set up in another, and though it is sparse, there is some graffiti here and there.

Also along the abandoned train route is an abandoned quarry with some of the old equipment still lying around, as well as a massive wall made of stone that is still standing all these years later.

Keep scrolling to take a virtual tour of this abandoned railway, seven of the tunnels that are still around, as well as the aforementioned massive rock wall that all once made up the Colorado Midland Railway:
