It's reported that there are over 3 billion soccer "football" fans across the world; that means many, many people will be seeing grass grown in Colorado, about 30 miles south of Greeley, during the 2026 FIF World Cup.

What Farm in Northern Colorado is Providing Grass for the World Cup?

Though I, myself, am not a huge fan of soccer, I was one of the big fans of the show Ted Lasso, so I do think it's very cool that Green Valley Turf's Platteville location will be a part of the 2026 World Cup. The World Cup will take place in 11 stadiums across America; the stadiums that will have "Colorado-Grown" grass are:

  • Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
  • Gillette Stadium near Boston.
  • NRG Stadium in Houston.

Green Valley Turf has been around since 1962; they provide sods for homeowners, landscapers, golf courses, sports fields, etc. "Sports Fields" would include football stadiums being used for World Cup Football.

This is just another way that Colorado is part of the soccer/football universe, as in July of 2025 it was announced Denver would be getting a Professional Women's Soccer Club and a new stadium for them to play matches in.

Why Do These Stadiums Need Grass From Colorado?

In an interview, Green Valley explained that one reason is because the stadiums (like the one in Houston) will be climate controlled to 70 degrees, and "..It's impossible to grow grass that can stand cool temperatures near Houston." So, about 24 truckloads of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye mix will head from Platteville to The World Cup.
