How Many Colorado Towns Have to Deal with a Broken Town Clock?

With all the cities and towns that Colorado has, you'd have to believe that Berthoud and Loveland aren't the only ones having to deal with the embarrassment of having big clocks for all to see, that don't work. Having a town clock dates back hundreds of years, they have a way of symbolizing community; when your town's clock doesn't work, it kind of makes it feel there's something amiss in town.

A lot of old "town clocks," like the one in Loveland that resides on 4th Street in Downtown, are just so old that there aren't parts or people with the "know-how" to repair them. Other times, it's about not having the money set aside in a fund to get the clock running again. Then, there are the times that the people in charge of that clock just don't have any concern over it not functioning properly.

Downtown Loveland's Clock May Come Back Better Than Ever

I've been following the travails of the frustrating 4th Street clock in Loveland for a few years; for a minute (pardon the pun) it really felt like they'd gotten it back on track; but no. As part of the 4th Street Renovation Project, they did take down the clock, hoping to have it back in working condition when they put it back in place, It would be wonderful to see that old clock with maybe a fresh coat of paint and arms that actually keep time, while enjoying the new sidewalks 4th Street will have.

How Long Has Berthoud's Clock Been on The Fritz?

It was Christmas Day in 2025 that I discovered that Berthoud has its own "Broken Clock" situation. I'd heard that Grandpa's Cafe was going to be open, and it sounded great. I showed up at around 12:30; the clock that the little "Hays Market" strip mall was was not reading the correct time. I can't be sure if it was stuck or just "off," but it's like they say, "even a broken clock is right, twice a day."
