Loveland Police Propose Plan to Ease Catalytic Converter Theft in Colorado
Property crime is a problem in Colorado — especially regarding catalytic converter theft.
A 2021 report ranked the Centennial State as the most at risk for this type of thievery, and unfortunately, that classification appears to be holding up. In 2022, Colorado criminals were still eager to profit from the precious metals found in these car parts.

However, the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) notes that marking a catalytic converter can prevent it from being stolen — and that's something the Loveland Police Department (LPD) is interested in trying.
According to a Facebook post from LPD, the police department is considering offering free DIY kits to residents, which would put serial numbers on (or mark) catalytic converters, through an opportunity with the state of Colorado.

LPD noted that the serial numbers would be placed in a way that would alter the use of the catalytic converter for a thief — hopefully preventing, or at least deterring, theft.

CATPA currently offers this service at select events, and AAA provided similar assistance until July of last year. If LPD moves forward with the effort, it could make prevention even more convenient for Coloradans.
The agency is asking for the public's opinion on the issue. You can let LPD know your thoughts here — and tell us what you think in the poll below.
